Every OBD-II diagnostic trouble code is a five-character code: one letter for the system, one number for generic or manufacturer-specific, and three numbers for the fault. Check Engine Light

Charging

Battery / Charging Light

The battery light on car means the charging system is not keeping up — alternator, belt or wiring. You can usually drive a short distance, but the battery light came on while driving drains the battery quickly. A battery light that stays on means the alternator is failing — get a charging test soon.

Cooling

Coolant Temperature Light

Red temperature light = engine overheating. Stop safely, let it cool, check coolant level. Driving hot can warp the head — the most expensive mistake in car care.

Lubrication

Oil Pressure Light

The oil pressure light is the one to never ignore: low oil pressure means the engine is not being lubricated. Stop immediately, check the dipstick, top up — if it stays on, tow it.

Brakes

Brake System Light

The brake light on the dash usually means the parking brake is on or brake fluid is low. If it stays on with the parking brake released, check brake fluid before driving.

Tires

TPMS Light

The TPMS light means tire pressure is low — often triggered by cold weather. Check and inflate all four tires to the door-sticker pressure; the light resets after a drive.

Chassis

ABS Light

The abs light on means the anti-lock brake system has a fault — normal braking still works, but ABS won't activate. If the abs light came on with the traction control light, it is usually a wheel-speed sensor. Scan for a C code to find the sensor or module; the dashboard light meaning for ABS is always "braking assist offline."

Safety

Airbag / SRS Light

An airbag light on means the supplemental restraint system has detected a fault — airbags may not deploy. It should be diagnosed promptly; SRS codes are B codes.

Car Won't Start

Car won't start usually means battery, starter, fuel or ignition. Click-click = battery or starter; cranks but no fire = fuel or spark; nothing at all = battery or security. Test the battery first — it is the cheapest check.

Car Overheating

Car overheating comes from coolant loss, a stuck thermostat, a failing water pump or a blocked radiator. A simple car overheating fix: check the coolant level cold, look for car leaking coolant or car leaking antifreeze under the engine, and inspect the radiator cap seal. Stop at the first sign of the temperature gauge rising — driving hot is how head gaskets die.

Cooling

Car Leaking Oil

Car leaking oil is usually a valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket or rear main seal. Park on clean cardboard to locate the drip, then match the leak to the part — see our gasket comparison.

Lubrication

Rough Idle

Rough idle points to vacuum leaks, a dirty throttle body or MAF sensor, failing spark plugs or injectors. A scan usually shows a lean or misfire code — P0171 and P0300 are the classics.

Fuel/Air

Car Shaking

Car shaking while driving can be wheels and tires (out of balance) or drivetrain; car shaking at high speeds is almost always tire balance or suspension. Engine shaking at idle — or the engine shaking when you put the car in gear — is misfire, mounts or fuel. Note when it shakes: speed, idle or braking tells you the system.

Car Stalling

Car stalling — especially at idle or stops — points to a dirty idle control valve, vacuum leak, failing fuel pump or crank sensor. Car stalling while driving under load is more often fuel delivery. A stalling car that restarts is often an intermittent electrical or fuel pressure issue.
